Prologue
Ten thousand years ago, Zordon of Eltar took on the great task of protecting the universe from the evil that would see it destroyed. He was given five coins of power, coins that would transform the wielders into the Power Rangers. Two coins were left behind on Eltar, it’s bearers given the task of protecting it, should evil seek to destroy the home Zordon was leaving behind: the dragon and the phoenix. The two warriors fought for their home planet for years until the threat grew too much for them to handle and the Dragon was captured by Rita's forces. Left alone, the phoenix could not fight the battles without help and trained the forces of Eltar before leaving for Earth to find her mentor.
Entering Earth's orbit, the Phoenix was attacked by the Dragon, now one of Rita's dark servants. Trying to reason with her old friend, the Phoenix barely defended herself. When the Dragon raised his dagger above her, the phoenix summoned her lance. The Dragon and Phoenix pierced each others armor, blood spilling out of their uniforms. For a moment, the Dragon's eyes cleared of their evil haze and he looked upon the body of his old friend as she pulled her helmet off, crimson hair wrapping around her shoulders. A moment later his eyes were hazed again, ready to finish her but a purple glow enveloped her body and she vanished to the Command Center. There, Zordon healed her, but she would carry the scars from then on, the scars returning on each of her descendants.
The battle carried on for ten years until Rita struck a deal with Zordon for them to meet. As they left to meet on the then flourishing Mars, the Dragon attacked the rangers once more. The Phoenix, now a mother, left her child alone in the Command Center to finish this battle. As they met on the battlefield, Zordon and Rita met up and Rita tricked Zordon then, trapping him in a time warp, forever condemning him to life in a Transdimensional Cylinder. The Phoenix and Dragon's battle led to the very place that Rita and Zordon were and the Phoenix killed the Dragon. It was then that Zordon used what power he had left at the time to trap Rita in a space dumpster along with the Dragon. The Phoenix left with her child and disappeared from the eyes of Zordon of Eltar. Ten thousand years passed without any sign of the Phoenix ever waking again until 1994.
Chapter One
Evalyn rubbed her stomach, her birthmark burning a bit as she entered the classroom of Angel Grove High. She heard the teacher mention something about someone helping her find her seat so she quickly retracted her white cane before a warm, obviously male, hand took hers and helped her over to her seat.
"Thanks." She mumbled as she set her bag next to her chair. She could feel him hesitate for a moment before going to his own seat. Sighing, she pulled her books out and started running her hands across the pages. For a moment, she cursed herself, missing the ease of just looking over the pages to read but it had been over ten years since she'd last had that option. She paid little attention to the teacher during that class, thinking about all the things she had to do that day. When the bell rang, she still didn't notice but someone came over to her.
"Hey, Evalyn." It was the boy from earlier. Instinctively, she turned her head towards the voice then made a face, realizing how ridiculous she must have looked. She put her hand towards her necklace, a gold coin that had been in her family for longer then anyone could remember, and prayed that he hadn't noticed.
"Hi... Um..." She searched for a name to match to the voice but it got hard with how many people talked to her so far that day. She could hear him chuckle softly before giving his name.
"Billy, don't worry about it. So, what do you think of Angel Grove High? I heard you went to Stone Canyon until a couple weeks ago."
"Yeah, me and my mom moved out of my dads house, long story. But Angel Grove is definitely better then Stone Canyon. So far anyway. I haven't figured out how to get to and from anywhere yet but... well, you understand I think."
"It's quite alright Evalyn. In any case, care for an escort to Calculus? It would be quite enjoyable to hear more about you." Evalyn couldn't resist the giggle that bubbled up and tried to casually disguise it as clearing her throat. He took her bag and handed it to her as she took her cane and extended it, just in case, before her took her arm in his and led the way.
As it turned out, they spent the entire walk there talking and almost the entire class until the teacher berated them. After that, they quieted down, promising to talk at lunch the next period.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ah, so this is Evalyn? Kim was telling me we had a new girl here." Evalyn didn't recognize the voice but a moment later, thankfully, Billy introduced her to everyone that was there. The first voice had been Jason Scott. She sat down and talked to Billy most of lunch but Kimberly, at one point, took over and started talking shopping with Evalyn. By the end of lunch, she had somehow managed to plann a full Saturday of shopping with Kimberly and Trini though how, she'd have a hard time figuring out.
She'd learned a lot from them though: All about Angel Grove, the constant attacks from aliens, Rita and Zedd. She'd laughed at that, until a couple of boys, Bulk and Skull she would later learn, came up and confirmed that. Then she learned about the Power Rangers, Angel Grove's protectors.
"Why don't Rita and Zedd attack in places other then Angel Grove?" She had asked as she bit into an apple, looking towards where the voices had been a moment before. Several of them had grown quiet until Trini spoke up.
"Rita and Zedd attack Angel Grove because of who is nearby. The Power Rangers didn't get their powers by themselves. They have a mentor and he can't fight, so the Rangers fight them in his place. You see, if they can take out the Power Rangers, then Earth is theirs. No one can stop them then, not unless the military blows up the moon but they'd never do that."
"Well they're really stupid then. Rita and Zedd I mean. Angel Grove isn't the only city in the world. I mean, it's great in a way because the Power Rangers know where to stay. Sucks for Angel Grove, all the destruction and rebuilding." Evalyn finished off the last bits of her food and sighed.
"I wish I could see them..." She said before standing up and finding her way to the trash cans and throwing away the remains of her lunch then left, finding her way to her next class alone. She got desperately lost, unfortunately and missed over half of it before a teacher found her on the opposite side of the school. She spent the remain of that class crying in the office, until Billy and Jason came to find her.
"I'm sorry Evalyn, we should have gone after you. We just figured... you know, you needed time to yourself." Jason said, rubbing the back of his head. She merely shook her head as Billy grabbed her bag for her and walked out of the office with her, offering to help her home.
"No, my mom is giving me a ride. She gets off early at the hospital today, since they know about my... condition." Evalyn grimaced as she took her bag from him before walking out of the building and sitting on a bench by the curb. She could hear people leaving the school, quite a lot of people.
"Right... Today's a half day. Some science fair thing..." She mumbled to herself before a car horn beeped three times, a sign to her that her mother was there. She quickly got up and searched for her way to the car then got inside.
"How was your first day?" Her mother asked casually.
"Same old thing, different day. I met a few people, they're nice. Kim and Trini tricked me into spending Saturday shopping with them."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a couple weeks later, Evalyn sat in her science class at Angel Grove High School, her fingers running across the braille in her book. In the front of the class, the teacher rambled on about a lab the class would be doing. She couldn’t take part in it, her blindness being an inconvenience to her classmates. Apparently her dismay was plain on her face because a moment later someone spoke to her.
“Evalyn?” She turned her head towards the voice, recognizing it as Billy Cranston. She had grown accustomed to him coming and talking to her near the end of the classes they had together. And she had been welcomed at lunch with all of his friends. Her friends too now.
“What can I do for you Billy?” She asked as she closed up her book and stuffed in her backpack. He took it from her a moment later, grinning from ear to ear. She could hear it in his voice when he spoke again.
“Well, I was hoping you you’d go with me to the Juice Bar after school. My treat.” It took all of his will pwoer not to drop her bag right there and leave, already feeling like an idiot for asking.
“I’d love to Billy, if you don’t mind helping me home first. I need to drop some things off at home for my dad to pick up. Since the divorce, we've been sending him whatever we find of his stuff but this can't be sent, y'know?”
“Sure, I understand how that is.” Billy smiled and took her head, helping her out of the room.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An hour later, Billy led Evalyn towards her house, the blonde teen happy to be walking home with someone rather than finding her way using her cane. Suddenly, a strange feeling ran down her spine, making her feel uneasy.
“Billy…?” Was all Evalyn could say before she was thrown into something hard, Billy calling her name fearfully. A tree at her best guess, was what she had slammed into. She could feel her consciousness slowly slipping away, she couldn’t hear Billy saying anything. Evalyn missed what he said about her and some ‘command center’.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Evalyn regained consciousness, she knew she wasn’t at home. Her head pounded and she could hear someone shuffling around. It was at this moment she was slightly thankful she was blind, any bright lights wouldn’t intensify her headache. Someone walked over to her and she felt a warm hand cover her own.
“Evalyn, you’re awake. Thank god!” She smiled at the concern in Billy’s voice, turning her hand up to hold his, the gesture alone comforting, knowing somebody was with her.
“Billy, where are we? I hate not knowing where I am.” There was a slightly fearful tone in her voice. The last time she had felt like this was when she was waking up in the car crash that had caused her blindness. Sirens had blared, hurting her head and she couldn’t find her parents anywhere. She had crawled along the ground, feeling out for one of them, already blind. The last thing she remembered was her parents arguing, her mother yelling about her father driving drunk. Strong hands picked her up, saying comforting words while she tried vainly to seek out her parents. Billy’s words drove her out of the memory.
“… Command Center. The Power Rangers had you brought here after Goldar attacked us. You hit that tree pretty hard, you’re lucky to be alive.”
“To bad it didn’t knock everything back in place so I can see again.” She said, getting depressed at the thought. Evalyn could hear Billy sigh sadly before letting her hand go and walking away. Evalyn laid there for a while before sitting up slowly, her hand exploring around for her cane. Not finding it, she sighed, her hand going to the gold coin she wore as a necklace and asking it for luck before getting up to explore around.
“Ai yi yi yi yi! You shouldn’t be up!” The sudden exclamation startled Evalyn, making her trip over something.
“Oh dear… Didn’t you see that in front of you?” Hot tears burned at her eyes and she got up, feeling a sharp pain in her leg and knowing a dark bruise would be there soon enough. It was bad enough dealing with being blind but when people had to asking things like that!
“No, I didn’t! I’m blind! Or didn't anybody tell you!” She snapped, doing her best to glare towards the voice. Someone came up behind her then, she could hear them approaching and arms wrapped themselves around her waist. A moment of panic set in, Evalyn fighting against the arms. The moment of sheer panic suddenly made the coin on her neck shine brightly, and she was encased in purple armor, a silver shield wrapping around her chest and a helmet covered her head. The world suddenly came into focus for Evalyn, the Command Center, Alpha and Billy. She could see them all and she felt like crying.
“E-Evalyn..?” Billy’s voice shook a bit as he stared at her in shock. At first she didn’t understand until she raised her hand to look at it.
“I…. I can see. I can see Billy… And… And what am I wearing?” Evalyn could never have seen the Power Rangers before and nobody had ever described them to her.
“Evalyn… That’s a Power Rangers suit. How is that possible?”
“This is what a Power Ranger looks like? Wow!” She was far too excited, being able to see to think of much anything else. Billy snapped his fingers in front of her to regain her attention.
“How do you have the Power Evalyn?” Billy asked and before she could reply, a voice boomed over them.
“EVALYN POSSESSES THE PHOENIX POWER COIN. IT WAS LEFT ON ELTAR TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO WITH THE DRAGON COIN TO PROTECT MY PEOPLE WHILE I FOUGHT RITA AND HER DARK FORCES.”
“If it was on Eltar, how is it here now?” Billy asked then added: “And how is it giving Evalyn her sight back?”
“THE PHOENIX WAS BROUGHT HERE WHEN IT WAS NO LONGER NEEDED TO PROTECT ELTAR. THE BEARER NEVER MADE IT TO HAND IT OVER TO ALPHA AND MYSELF AND IT APPEARS THAT SHE ENTRUSTED IT WITH HER FAMILY TO CARE FOR UNTIL THE PHOENIX WAS FORCED BACK INTO THE FIGHT. AS FOR EVALYN’S EYESIGHT, THE PHOENIX REPRESENTS REBIRTH AND IN THAT POWER, HER SIGHT WAS GIVEN BACK TO HER. HOWEVER, THE PHOENIX’S POWER WILL ONLY WORK IN A MORPHED STATE.”
“Unbelievable… Another Power Ranger. Again!”
“IT WAS NOT OUR INTENTION TO HIDE THE PHOENIX OR THE DRAGON FROM ANY OF YOU. THE PHOENIX WAS THOUGHT LOST AND THE DRAGON’S REAPPEARANCE WAS UNEXPECTED. THE TEAM OF DRAGON AND PHOENIX WAS A FORMIDABLE ONE AND WE CAN ONLY BE THANKFUL THAT RITA NEVER GOT HER HANDS ON THE PHOENIX. IT IS A SHAME AS WELL, AS WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO UTILIZE THE POWERS THEY SHARED.”
“Who says?” Asked Evalyn, looking right up at Zordon.
“THE DRAGONS POWER WAS DEPLETED BY THE DARK MAGIC OF THE GREEN CANDLE.”
“You said yourself that the Phoenix represents rebirth. Who is to say that the power of the phoenix can’t give life back to the Dragon?” It wasn’t her place, she knew. She was just a blind girl who had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Power Rangers would take this from her soon enough, a blind girl being an inconvenience for their team, just as she was to everyone in school.
“Ai yi yi! She’s right! We could use the infinite energy the Phoenix carries to re-energize the Dragon coin.”
“WE WOULD NEED A NEW DRAGON BEARER FIRST. AND TOMMY HAS TAKEN THE POSITION AS WHITE RANGER ALREADY.”
“So we’ll find one.” Evalyn said, as if it were the most simple thing in the world.
“We need someone who is willing to fight for the Earth, someone strong hearted and caring. Personality is important in choosing a Power Ranger.”
“We’ll find the Dragon, I know we can do it.” Evalyn said confidently.
