- The notorious poverty of Japanese animators once again come in for scrutiny, with animators reportedly earning an hourly wage of only $3, less than a burger flipper.
Average incomes for anime industry employees are said to be pathetic even by Japanese standards – actual animators received an average annual wage of ¥1,050,000 ($10,000). Artists received ¥2,320,000, whilst performers could expect only ¥3,330,000 and even directors only received ¥4,950,000.
Looking at the results by age reveals it is most probably seniority and not merit which is the primary determinant of wages, a practice which became entrenched in Japan in the post-war period and still dominates the labour market – those in their twenties received an average of ¥1,100,000, those in their thirties ¥2,130,000, whilst those aged 40-60 found their earnings peaking at a meagre ¥4,000,000.
Actually dividing this income by hours worked (Japanese companies not infrequently demand massive amounts of unpaid overtime) reveals an even more pitiful truth – the average hourly wage for animators is estimated at ¥298 ($3), that for artists ¥689, and that for directors ¥1,412.
For reference, McDonald’s employees in Tokyo can expect an hourly wage of ¥1,000.
Japan’s plunging marriage and birth rates have often been blamed on these kind of hiring practices – employees in their twenties and thirties increasingly report that girlfriends, let alone wives, are out of their reach. The situation would appear to be even more aggravated in the anime industry.
The survey also asked about job satisfaction – unsurprisingly, 62% reported their love of drawing was the main motivator, as opposed to other factors such as money. 16.6% reported grave dissatisfaction with their work, 37% “dissatisfaction” and only 3.5% were “very satisfied.” 70% reported dissatisfaction with their wages.
With studio output declining recently it seems unlikely matters will improve. SauceUpdate - Quote :
- The plight of Japan’s pathetically paid animators is once again receiving attention, this time from an NHK TV programme which delves into their dismal pay and the increasing pressure of outsourcing to poorer countries.
“With their cheap production costs, orders to China and Korea are increasing.”
Animation company CEO: “If we send it overseas we can get it done quickly and cheaply.”
“Doesn’t this mean there’ll be no more animators being raised in Japan?”
Average annual salaries: Animator (Animation): ¥1,050,000 ($11,500) Animator (Illustration): ¥2,300,000 ($25,000)”
Although anime fans can usually be found railing at the supposed exploitation of the animator underclass, the actual situation is rather more nuanced – low level animation work is essentially drudge labour requiring comparatively little skill and even less in the way of creativity, and clearly the majority of animators do not climb the ranks to become high level creative talents.
More importantly, without these toiling wretches it is unlikely many niche series could ever be produced at all – fans might find higher wages for animation staff a very mixed blessing Sauce |

| I wouldn't...there's somethings about anime that just don't make sense in the eyes of Japan. Half the time you seem like an Otaku for even liking the damn thing, and sometimes you just get flat out dumped for liking it lol. |

| Subject: Chair Maims Girl by Anal Penetration Thu May 13, 2010 4:12 pm | |
| As soon as I read the word China, I immediately stopped reading the article. - Quote :
- A girl has been critically injured after the chair she was sitting on exploded, propelling sharp chair fragments into her rear with devastating consequences.
The girl, a resident of Xiamen in China’s Fujian province, was sat using her computer when the chair she was sitting on exploded.
She was quickly taken to hospital, and in emergency surgery doctors recovered a dozen screws and fragments of plastic from her flesh.
Though severely injured and barely conscious, her condition is now stable.
Just why the chair exploded is not recorded, but the previous case of a boy killed by a similar explosion indicates the likely cause – the boy, also Chinese, was killed when a manufacturing defect caused the gas cylinder in the chair to explode, propelling sharp parts into his rectum and causing him to bleed to death before help could arrive..
A number of other cases of Chinese chairs exploding are also recorded – dubious standards of manufacturing in such chairs has the unfortunate side effect of turning them into potential death traps, capable of exploding with considerable force and projecting the cylinder and parts of the chair into the vulnerable rear of anyone unfortunate enough to be so seated when the chair goes off. |

| Whilst often reported tersely in newspaper stories the nation over, the crimes of petty perverts are rarely reported from the perpetrator’s perspective – the below interview seeks to rectify this, asking a voyeur jailed for taking upskirt photos of girls about his motivations and techniques… The exchange, between the convicted pantsu peeper and various denizens of 2ch: - Quote :
- Fined $3,500.
How old? Job?
27, IT. Lost my job because of all this. Wasn’t dismissed though – just had to quit for other reasons.
What did you snap?
Upskirts in a Shinjuku department store.
What now?
I’ll be a NEET as I have some savings.
After 3 months I can go on the dole and that’ll pay my rent… then I might look for a new job.
My real name was reported, but it’s the same as a sportsman so if I’m Googled it should be OK.
You habitual?
This was my first time getting caught. But as for upskirts, I’ve been doing it since high school.
So it’s the excitement of the criminal act?
Well, you watch it on Winny and so on, but it’s totally different. Taking the pictures and then taking them home to check if it went well is incredibly exciting.
As far as crimes go, taking upskirt pics is about the most pathetic one out there, honestly.
Yeah, I couldn’t even tell the other people in the cell what I was in for. Told them it was for fraud. Some old guy in for assault told me I was pretty good at lying…
You’re a total tool. Don’t you think it was inexcusable?
Well, I’ll stick with downloading movies for a bit.
For a bit? You’re going to do it again?
When I used a pinhole lens I was never caught, so when things have cooled off I might try that again. For some sad virgin like me, that’s all I have to live for.
Why were you caught?
Basically because I was fiddling with the camera. I wouldn’t get near to the subject, but soon its boyfriend came out of the toilet and started watching me, and I got caught.
You made the news? Local newspaper?
Yomiuri I think. On the 30th page of Google at the moment.
They print your face? If you’ve been at since high school I bet you are grotesquely ugly.
Just the name. My face is a real eyesore. I’m a rank virgin. Seeing this girl I liked go home with a nice looking girl, and then seeing an upskirt video, were the impetus. It’s all her fault.
Tell us how you were caught.
I was peeping. → Boyfriend came out of toilet: “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” → My lens was discovered → 119 →I though I’d run off but her boyfriend was huge and then 3 police came → I was taken to the station.
My friend was busted recently. What happens with the arrest process, how long until you get to speak to counsel?
In my case:
Arrest, prosecution, detention (20 days), simple trial, fine, release. Maybe if you apply for counsel you can get it any time, I don’t know.
What did your parents say?
Mother: I’ll keep giving you an allowance so keep at it!
Father: Well, if you do that you’ll end up caught.
Honestly I think they are spoiling me a bit with level of niceness.
Your parents are total scum aren’t they?
How were you caught? I want to try so give me some tips.
Warnings:
Never make eye contact with the subject.
Avoid trains – no place to run if caught.
Use a pinhole camera, they sell them in Akiba.
Do it in a spot where it’s natural for people to stand, like the back of a conbini.
Was this a fine plus jail or…?
Fine only… I thought I’d be given a suspended sentence or something as it was a first offence, but when they saw the size of my collection it became a fine.
I’m guessing the boyfriend was the worst part…
It was harsh. He was holding me with one arm whilst he abused me, and worse yet everyone was looking at me.
Didn’t you want to run?
The boyfriend was hard, then shop employees came and surrounded me and I couldn’t get to the elevator. I’ve actually been caught and run off OK four times before.
[…]
I had 120 tapes of an hour each. They were all confiscated and that was a bigger shock than being arrested!
You ever do it on a loli? What age ranges?
Not interested in them. My strike zone is middle school girls to house wives.
You’re really weird, treating this like it was nothing. I’d be considering suicide.
I’ve got savings, my real name’s relatively safe on Google, and I quit myself. Those are the reasons. If it was the first hit on Google I might have killed myself by now.
You don’t regret it at all, do you?
Not really. I’m scum, and nobody really got hurt, or something like that.
Thank you all for sticking with a lowlife like me for so long. |

- Two boys aged 10 and 11 have been convicted of attempted rape based solely on the accusations of an 8-year-old girl, despite the girl withdrawing her claims in court, and there being no physical evidence of any assault. Both children are to become registered sex offenders.
The boys, then both aged 10, were accused by an 8-year-old girl of taking to various locations in their London neighbourhood and raping her. The boys denied the accusations.
The incident came to light when the girl’s mother was told by another child that the boys were hurting the girl – she soon found her daughter with the boys in a nearby field.
When first questioning the girl, police had her tell them how the boys had pulled down her underwear and had their way with her. However, when questioned in court, the girl explicitly denied being raped and said she had lied to her mother about what had happened as she was worried about being a naughty girl and not getting any sweets.
The defence also pointed out that there was “no useful medical evidence, no DNA evidence and no forensic evidence; nothing” available to support the charges, save the girl’s accusations.
The court even made a crude show of attempting to make the proceedings intelligible to the children, with the judge and lawyers abandoning their ludicrous wigs and gowns for the occasion, and the court timetable being rearranged to resemble that of a primary school.
The defence appealed the common sense of the jury, suggesting the incident was nothing more than an innocent childhood game gone awry:
“What this case is about is not a serious crime. It is about children. There is a game called ‘You show me yours and I will show you mine’.
Maybe it went too far, maybe it went to touching, maybe they were doing something they had seen on television, maybe they were playing that age-old game, doctors and nurses.”
Unfortunately, the jury had none, voting 10 to 2 in favour of convicting both boys of two counts each of attempted rape. Sentencing is due in two months, during which time the boys have been released on bail.
They will also become registered sex offenders, although the judge lamely admitted he was “not quite sure” how that would work. Sauce lol "Show me yours and I will show you mine" I skimmed and had thought that was an actual you know game..game..With how the world is becoming I actually didn't have much of a doubt it wasn't a actual game. I didn't even know you could become a sex offender at the age of 10 either that's abit messed up
